Every once and a while we get a "car stolen!" thread on pp.com. Then I go on and on about every 3g owner needing to install a kill switch.
Well today I installed one in my new lude and decided to take some pictures. This is a very simple and cheap setup.
- Loom tubing
- Wire stripper
- Crimper
- Snips
- Extra wire 14AWG
- Red butt connectors
- Switch
I'm using NAPA # 786123 switch in this tutorial. I've used this switch in 4 different cars and it is reliable.
- Red Female disconnect terminals
- Electrical Tape
- 2 medium sized flat head screw drivers or ideally a trim remover set like this:
Also important: you need some imagination!
You need imagination because it's up to you to decide where you will hide the switch. I'm not going to reveal my location in this tutorial for obvious reasons. I can give some advice though:
- NEVER!!! Put the switch anywhere under the driver side or passenger side dash, don't do it! The second a thief suspects a kill switch they are going to be looking and feeling under the dash. Seriously, don't.
- Don't put it in the glove box, CD box, change box, etc. Those are going to be the second place a thief looks for a hidden switch.
- If possible put it somewhere you can reach while seated in the drivers seat. This way you can flip it without drawing attention and you will be far more likely to use it if it's not an ordeal to get to.
- Do a google on ghost switches and/or magnetic switches for a more advanced setup. In this tutorial I'm only covering a simple store bought on/off switch.
- Consider buying a second cheap switch that you DO put right smack under the drivers side dash and have wires running off of it that go... nowhere! Mr. Thief will be distracted bumbling with this fake switch trying to start the car and not busy looking for your real one!
Now the procedure:
Fold Down the rear seat. Hidden under the carpet in the middle, just inside the trunk, is a plastic push tab holding the carpet down. Remove it by prying with the flat head screw drivers or use a trim remover set:
On the left side rear seat hinge there is a tab you just pull off. After that slide the seat to the left side and the right side will have enough room to swing free of the hinge and you can remove the seat back. Take the seat and trunk carpet out of the car and a single piece. The carpet may also be attached to the spare tire cover with a slip on bracket, slide it off before trying to pull the carpet out:
Remove the right side plastic trim that was behind the seat. It is held on by 3 plastic tabs and 1 rubber stopper. Once that is out you will see the right side trunk lining is held in place by some more plastic push tabs. Remove those as well so that you can pull the lining away:
If you look behind the lining you will see the part of the harness that runs to the gas tank, just before it exits the cabin:
Squeeze and push this blue wire holder to free the harness enough to work with:
Pry back the harness tubing so you can access the wires:
Pull out the YEL/BLK wire, this is the fuel pump positive wire. It is the same colour for all years and models (even carb). All we are going to be doing is putting a switch on this wire:
Cut the wire, strip it, and using red butt connectors attach a length of extra 14 AWG wire to either end of the YEL/BLK wire. The extra wire will run to wherever you are locating your switch.
After that put the tubing around the new wire and secure it with electrical tape:
Here is an example of my switch hooked up for testing:
This is a pretty simple and cheap mod that
will save your car. This exact setup saved my 89 from being stolen when I was living in California. I came out from work and my ignition had been broken. The car power was on but they weren't able to start it thanks to my switch. You do need to flip the switch religiously whenever you get out of the car, it needs to be a habit that you do without thinking.
Q&A:
Q: MustardCat! Why don't you just tap into the pump wire near the main relay? It's so much easier to get to.
A: That is exactly why you don't do it there because it is also easy for a thief to get to! In fact it is downright
stupid to wire in any security system right under the dash like that (which most of them are). You want that thing to be a bitch to install with the brain hidden behind the back seat panels with all the wiring tapped into the harness near the blower where it's damn hard to get to. If an experienced person peeks under the dash they should not be able to detect any aftermarket wiring.
Q: How long does it take to install?
A: This install took about 1 hour but it depends where you locate the switch. Fitting the switch and routing the wiring could take much longer.
Q: Why not solder the wires together?
A: This has been a debate for years. If you are a solder guy then do that.
S: Hey! You did "X" wrong!
A: I've had this exact same setup on 3 different ludes, 3 different Accords, and a Saturn. It works, it's hidden, and it's reliable. What more can you ask for? If you think there is a better way, go for it.
So if you don't have a kill switch already,
just do it!
