Centering Single Wiper Conversion

When you do a single wiper conversion wouldn't it be nice if the wiper arm actually stopped in the middle of the windshield? The reason you can't get them to do this now is the little arm that turns the wipers stops at the end of the wiper arc. What we are going to do is modify where the turning arm sits when the wiper is turned off. By rotating the turning arm so it sits in the middle of the wiper arc when the wiper is off the wiper arm will stop in the middle of the windshield.

Here's how you do it.

I'm going to use my project CRX for this explanation. All Hondas can be done this way.

In Pic1 you can see the typical offset wiper. Not very inspiring.

Disassembly

Raise the hood and remove the wiper arms and plastic tray that sits under them. This will give you access to the wiper control rods and turn arm. (With the hood off this job was very easy and quick :)

The turning arm is mounted on the end of the wiper motor shaft and is about 3" long with a dogleg bend in it. Pic2
Note the position of the turn arm with the wipers turned off. It's usually pointing left or right but not up and down (center of the wiper arc). For the wiper to stop in the middle of the windshield it needs to be pointing down!

Using a 12mm wrench remove the bolt from the wiper motor shaft. You will need to rock the turn arm to get it to slide off the shaft. When the turn arm is removed you can see it's got a keyway hole cut into it so it can only be mounted one way. You could try drilling the keyway round but you run the risk of the turn arm slipping. It sucks when the wipers run across your hood!

At this point I held the turn arm straight down against the wiper motor shaft to see how much the keyway needed to be rotated so it could be reinstalled that way. I was lucky and my original stop position was level to the left. I would only have to rotate the keyway 90 degrees. Pic2

To remove the turn arm from the wiper connecting rod twist the turn arm slowly until the turn arm ball pops out of the connecting rod socket.

I cut the keyway flat off at the first bend and re-welded the arm 90 degrees turned to the original position. Pic3 & Pic4

Since most people don't have a welder lying around you can take the turn arm to a local welder or body shop and have them weld it for you. Make sure you know where the new keyway position has to be so you don't end up repeating this process again. One way to do this is to cut the keyway flat off the arm. Set the keyway back on the wiper motor shaft and while holding the other half of the turn arm in the straight down position scribe a line on both pieces where they meet.

When you are done making the new turn arm it's a good idea to paint it so it doesn't rust.

Reassembly

It's a good idea before you start to reassemble the wiper parts to turn the car to the ON position. Turn your wipers on then off so you know the wiper motor has stopped in the right position.

Pop the turn arm back into the wiper connecting rod. Slide the turn arm back onto the wiper motor shaft. If everything went right the turn arm should be pointing straight down. Tighten the 12mm nut on the wiper motor shaft.

Before I replace the plastic tray I like to test the new mod. Make sure the wiper motor is stopped in the correct place and attach the wiper arm in the new centered position. Turn the key to the ON position and turn the wiper on. It should work like it did before but when the wiper is turned off it should now stop in the center of the windshield! Pic5 Cool!

Now you can remove the wiper arm and reinstall the plastic tray.
