First you need to get part # 59935K83 from:

http://www.mcmaster.com/

They are $6.42 each, you will only need one.

This rod end will replace the stock one that attaches to the bottom of the shifter. The stock one is metal on the outside, but the center is plastic and is usually worn out with a ton of slack.

The only mod it will need is to be rethreaded to match the thread on the stock one.

Grind off the threads:

Grind a bevel around the end, this makes it easier to get the threader to grab:

Use a 6mm 1.0 threader:

Done, now it will screw into the end of the lower shifter cable:

Very snug and tight:

You wont be reusing the washer, and to get the cotter pin through just bend it into a bit of a curve:

Now you need some electrical tape and a razor blade.

Take the central ball on the shifter apart and wipe all the grease off.

Cut the tape so it fits inside the lip on each of these pieces. You will need to experiment to get the right amount of tape and make it as tight as you want it. On mine I wound up with 2 pieces on one side and on on the other. (3 total):

Do this for both of these parts:

Now on the side lever put one or two strips of tape on the bottom part like in this pic:

Now grease everything up and reinstall. The lower part will need to be adjusted a bit since the rod end is a bit shorter then the stock one:

Check out my "Smoother Shifter" tutorial for instructions on re-greasing everything.

Now the shifter will be much "tighter" with far less free play. Nice.
