First I will show you the defect with ingalls camber kits made for 3G Preludes and later I will explain why there is no reason to even use a camber kit at all.
Quick back story:
I was swapping the complete suspension from my 89 to my new 91 and I noticed something concerning about the front Ingalls camber kit and the knuckle. Almost everyone who has a camber kit on the front has this particular kit so I figured I better post up this info.
On the back of my knuckle, near the top, a groove had been worn into it. It was the same on both sides. picture:
Further investigation showed it was the stud on the ingalls kit coming into contact with the knuckle during minor suspension compression. Cutting down the stud will do nothing because as you see in the pics the nut is so damn close as well:
Worn stud:
First I tried the alternate mounting method of putting the kit on the top of the upper control arm. This turns out to be even worse with multiple parts of the kit coming into contact with the knuckle at even less suspension compression.
pictures:
I also tested the ball joint and it doesn't run out of travel before hitting the knuckle:
So not only is the kit damaging the knuckle but just as bad it causes the suspension to run out of travel very quickly, well before it would otherwise. This will hurt handling, ride comfort, and if left unchecked might cause the knuckle to break at that groove.
Throw those kits in the trash! If you MUST use them only use them on the rear. You DO NOT want this kit on the front especially if your going low with the suspension.
You don't even need camber kits at all:
Worried about the inside tread of the tires getting chewed up? Had this happen to your tires before and thought it was because you didn't have a camber kit?:
Your tires got chewed up because your TOE was not set correctly. This happened because you changed the ride height (which throws out the toe setting) and did not get it aligned afterwards. Or the alignment place did a bad job (common). Remember ANY change in ride height needs an alignment afterwards!
Negative camber alone is OK and won't notably wear your tires.
This is wear caused by negative camber:
This is wear caused by having some negative camber AND toe that is not set correctly:
/\ If your tires are wearing like this you need an alignment, if you already got one and they still wear like this then they didn't do it right.
Just save the money you would spend on a camber kit and use it to get a good alignment.
